MotoGiro D'Italia 2017 - Day 2

  • Day 2 Spoleto - San Benedetto Del Tronto. Distance 258Km

Starting from Spoleto we were today heading east towards the Adriatic Sea. Fantastic weather again, it was just over 30 degrees C, so nice when riding but a bit warm when stopped. We climbed north towards the Monti Sibillini National park which had some of the most spectacular views and roads. We hit the first cafe stop at 11am, gave a few more universal 'I'm having a brew' hand gestures to the passing riders, we still hadn't got into the fact that this was an actual time trial with big prizes to be won at the end. Had I known sooner that the 1st prize was a Ducati motorbike, I might've learnt the rules a bit quicker! The winding roads just seem to go on forever and the best part about it, hardly any traffic at all out in the countryside. It really was a bikers paradise. After several stops taking on food and drink kindly provided by the local bike club to that area, we ended up in Macerata for another Special Stage time trial. We also got to look in a privately owned Motorbike racing museum which was fantastic considering it was someones personal collection. Macerata-small jpeg.jpg

Back on the road again, the Velos were performing as expected, no issues what so ever, just thumping along the roads taking it all in. We started to get close to the coast now and we eventually got our first glimpse of the Adriatic Cingoli Me and Bill - small jpeg.jpg

It is there in the background I promise! Cingoli - small.jpg

We started to drop down from the hills now, so we knew that the coast was now close and eventually hit the east side of Italy where we rode along the first major road we had been on all day, the SS16, which was a bit of a slog to finish. However we eventually pulled into San Benedetto Del Tronto and the finish line was in all it's Moto Giro glory with the big red Truck parked up, inflatable Giro finish line right in the town centre. A great day. San Benedetto finish - small.jpg

So all that was left was to take in the Adriatic views from a cafe oposite the hotel with a beer and a couple of Partagas Series D No.4 Habanas.
